Patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) have a significantly greater prevalence of early adverse life events , including general trauma as well as physical, emotional and sexual abuse, according to a new study in Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, the official journal of the American Gastroenterological Association.

"Various types of early adverse events are associated with the development of irritable bowel syndrome, particularly among women," said Lin Chang, MD, of the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California Los Angeles and lead author of this study. "Addressing early adverse events and associated psychological symptoms in these patients is important and may help guide management approaches that reduce symptoms and improve overall well-being."

Although associations between an abuse history and IBS have been reported before, in the current study, researchers aimed to assess simultaneously the association of a range of traumatic events ? not limited to abuse ? with IBS and the impact of differences in gender and psychological factors on these associations. Men and women with IBS who were 18 years of age and older were recruited primarily from community advertisements in the greater Los Angeles area. Early adverse life events were evaluated in 294 IBS patients (79 percent were women) and 435 controls (77 percent were women). Validated questionnaires assessed gastrointestinal, psychological and somatic symptoms.

Compared with controls, IBS patients reported a higher prevalence of general trauma, physical punishment, emotional abuse and sexual events. These events included witnessing violence, mental illness in the family, emotional abuse, and being forced to touch intimate parts of a person's body or have genital sex. These significant differences were observed mainly in women. Emotional abuse was the strongest predictor of IBS. Further, the strength of the relationship between the early trauma and IBS was reduced after controlling for the presence of psychological and other non-gastrointestinal symptoms.

Early adverse life events refer to traumatic experiences during childhood encompassing physical, sexual or emotional abuse, as well as discordant relationships with a primary caretaker, or the loss of a parent. These events appear to be associated with an increased vulnerability toward developing functional gastrointestinal disorders, including IBS.

There?s plenty of shopping there too including Pottery Barn, Williams and Sonoma, Coldwater Creek and Joseph A. Banks to name a few.?The uptown mall area has drawn additional restaurants to the area like Paradise Bakery and Chipotle.

Not only does the mall keep drawing new businesses including Dave and Busters, but it draws Albuquerque home shoppers too who are looking for affordable, well built houses available in the area. Being close to shopping and dining is very appealing for a large number of home buyers.

Bluegrass legend and banjo pioneer Earl Scruggs, who helped profoundly change country music with Bill Monroe and later with guitarist Lester Flatt, has died. He was 88.

Scruggs' son Gary said his father passed away Wednesday morning at a Nashville, Tenn., hospital. Gary Scruggs said his father died of natural causes.

The elder Scruggs was an innovator who pioneered modern banjo sound. His use of three fingers rather than the clawhammer style elevated the banjo from a part of the rhythm section ? or a comedian's prop ? to a lead instrument.

His string-bending and lead runs became known worldwide as "the Scruggs picking style." It was perhaps most prominently displayed on the iconic theme from "The Beverly Hillbillies."

Gary Scruggs says funeral plans are incomplete.

GOLDEN RULES OF BUSINESS ETHICS | Reputational Compliance

The golden rules of business ethics are the pillars that hold the success of every vibrant and successful business. You cannot make any reasonable headway in business if you do not appreciate the importance of business ethics. In fact, business ethics is the tonic that adds flavour to the overall corporate image of modern businesses.

In this article are the views of business leaders on what makes business ethics robust and indispensable as far as standing out amongst the crowd of business competition is concerned. According to the twenty six business leaders interviewed, below are the golden rule of business ethics.

FIVE PILLARS OF BUSINESS ETHICS | INGREDIENTS OF ETHICAL BUSINESS DEALINGS

1. TRANSPARENCY: transparency is the foundation upon which other features of business ethics can be built on. People will always suspect that you are harbouring doggy dealings when you are not transparent enough. By transparency, I don?t mean letting your business loose for competitors to prey on. In fact, securing your business secrets and trade information is a sound ethical way of doing business. What transparency in this context is referring to is a company?s ability to disclose adherence to regulatory and legislative requirements with proof.

2. COMMITMENT: the general public by nature disregards any entity that does not stand by its words. Doing business in an ethical manner can be daunting and confusing if there is no committed contingency plan in place. Contingency plan is an important ingredient of strategic management and strategic management accounting has gradually moved to. A company that is committed to good cause like making the environment greener can never go wrong as far as business ethics is concerned. This explains why lots of attention has recently been drawn to responsible and green investment.

3. IMPLEMENTATION: in businesses, it is not enough to just have procedures, rules and policies in place. The best sets of ways of doing business will translate into nothing if not implemented. Managers have got to learn that implementation of policies is crucial for them to effectively carryout their management functions. The investment that we strive to grow in generally acceptable way will vanish if that nitty-gritty of good business ethics is not enforced in the day-to-day dealings of a business.

4. STAFF TRAINING: Your staffs are the most important asset that drives every other asset you have in your organization- even though this is not shown in the assets register or statement of financial position otherwise known as the balance sheet. Without proper, relevant and adequate training, a company?s objective of operating in an ethical framework will be useless. The importance of investing in the human resource of a going concern used to be usually realised in the medium and long term. That era when a business will have to wait that long before reaping from the fruit of its labour is gone, human capital development benefits are now reaped in short, medium and long run. Companies that deploy and train their employees on the use of cloud accounting starts reaping from the investment immediately both in the form of contributing towards building greener environment and saving costs for example.

5. USE OF GREEN EQUIPMENT: a major component of robust business ethics is to actively seek ways to minimise the emission of dangerous substances into the atmosphere. The last golden rule of business ethics that was identified by those interviewed before writing this article is that corporations have to use equipment that has less potential of causing harm to the environment.

The golden rules of business ethics that are listed in this article are by no means exhaustive in terms of what needs to be done to put our business in a better competitive position, they are however the key to letting your impact as a business be felt both in your local community and beyond. If you can take good care of the areas identified in this blog post, the overall outlook of your company?s public image and brand would be seen from positive perspective.

Once again, the University of Texas School of Law?s Law Students For The Arts will be offering a free legal clinic for low-income artists.

Volunteer attorneys will provide free legal advice on arts-related legal matters to low-income creative professionals such as artists, musicians and filmmakers. Attendees will be seen by appointment and can expect to spend up to 30 minutes receiving advice from an attorney.

Topics discussed may include copyright, trademark, contract, and any other legal issue related to the arts. Law students will assist artists in completing intake paperwork and clarifying the legal issue for which artists need advice. Cases not resolved at the clinic will be reviewed to see if further legal services can be provided at no charge.

This is third year Law Students For The Arts with support from Texas Accountants and Lawyers for the Arts has offered its free legal clinic.

Trayvon Martin's parents head to Congress for briefing

As a special prosecutor weighs seemingly contradictory witness accounts about the death of Trayvon Martin, the teen's case will be the focus of a congressional briefing on Tuesday afternoon --?and Martin's parents are among those expected to attend.

Rep. Frederica Wilson, D-Fla., organized the briefing on racial profiling and hate crimes in response to the shooting of Martin, an African American who was shot by George?Zimmerman,?a neighborhood watch captain on patrol?in Sanford, Fla.

The briefing is not as formal as a congressional hearing, but it marks the first time that?Congress has been brought into the?controversy.

A Justice Department official as well as a Martin family attorney were among those expected to speak at the House Judiciary Committee briefing.

It was not known if Martin's parents would address the briefing, but they are listed as attendees, not panelists.

Thousands march to city hearing on Martin's death

Details from the police report made at the scene of the Feb. 26 shooting were revealed on Monday. At least one witness, a 13-year-old boy, told police he saw?a man fitting?Zimmerman's description on the ground moaning before a shot was fired. Zimmerman?has said he shot in self-defense, and his?attorney says?he suffered a broken nose and other injuries when attacked by Martin.

One?neighbor told Dateline NBC that she heard what she thought was the moaning of a young person followed by a gunshot. She said she and her roommate saw Zimmerman straddling Martin's body?and that he didn't appear to be trying to help him.

Prosecutor Angela Corey called for patience on Monday as her team of investigators continues looking into Martin's killing. She did not say when investigators hope to decide whether enough evidence exists to prosecute.

World Bank: New Data Show Historic Declines in ... - Business Ethics

In 2012, the World Bank updated its estimates of global poverty rates. The results for the latest years studied ? 2005 to 2008 ? indicated that the percentage of people living below the poverty line declined for all six regions studied. This was the first decline over a three-year period since 1981.

The 2005-2008 findings are based on 850 surveys compiled from 130 developing countries; the surveys included 1.23 million households and provided a statistical snapshot of some 90% of the population of the developing world. For the purposes of the estimates, those unable to spend $1.25 a day on consumption (after adjusting for inflation and exchange rates) were classified as poor.

The findings of the World Bank?s??Global Poverty Estimate? (PDF) include:

-- The number of people living below the $1.25-a-day poverty line declined from 1.94 billion (52% of the population of the developing world) in 1981 to 1.29 billion (22%) in 2008, a 33.5% drop. Those living on less than $2 a day also declined, from 2.59 billion total in 1981 to 2.47 billion people in 2008, a drop of 4.6%.

-- East Asia saw the most dramatic declines in poverty rates, from 77% of its population in 1981 to 14% in 2008. The Middle East and North Africa region saw poverty fall from 9.6% in 1981 to 2.7% in 2008. Over the same time period, South Asia saw its population under the poverty measure decline from 61% to 36%.

-- China?s efforts to alleviate poverty accounted for a significant amount of global reduction, with its rate going from 84% in 1981 to 13.1% in 2008. On average, total poverty in the developing world declined by 1.05 percentage points per year between 2005 and 2008; when China is excluded, the reduction is 0.54 percentage points per year.

-- For the first time since 1981, less than half of the population of sub-Saharan Africa lived below the $1.25-a-day poverty line. Between 1981 and 2008, the region?s population living below the poverty line declined 4 percentage points, to 47%.

-- By 2010, using the $1.25 a day poverty measure, developing countries had achieved the United Nations Millennium Development Goal of halving the incidence of poverty rates in 1990. Eastern Europe and Central Asia reached this goal in 2008.

-- Although poverty rates in developing countries (excluding China) declined from 41% to 25% between 1981 and 2008, population growth has generally kept up with poverty reduction: ?At the current rate of progress there will still be around 1 billion people living below $1.25 per day in 2015.?

-- While the number of people living on between $1.25 and $2 a day has nearly doubled ? from 648 million in 1981 to 1.18 billion in 2008 ? the rate of those earning more than $2 a day has slowed. Those living on between $1.25 and $2 a day remain particularly vulnerable, as they are only covering their most basic expenses and are subject to the risk of slipping under the $1.25 line should they face an adverse income shock.

-- Nearly 649 million of those who moved above the $1.25 poverty line had a standard of living that was nevertheless below what would be defined as ?poor? in middle-income developing countries and far below that of rich countries.

The report notes that basing poverty calculations solely on consumption expenditures fails to capture spending on health, education and other indicators. These should be considered together with consumption-based poverty measures to gain a more holistic picture of the degree of poverty experienced, they suggest.

Team discovers mechanism for destroying particular cancer cells

An international team of scientists has announced a new advance in the ability to target and destroy certain cancer cells.

A group led by the University of Leicester has shown that particular cancer cells are especially sensitive to a protein called p21. This protein usually forces normal and cancer cells to stop dividing but it was recently shown that in some cases it can also kill cancer cells.

However, scientists have been unclear about how this happens.

Researcher Salvador Macip, from the University of Leicester Department of Biochemistry, said: "If we could harness this 'killing power' that p21 has, we could think of designing new therapies aimed at increasing its levels in tumours. This is what motivated us to look into it".

Now the team from the universities of Leicester and Cardiff in the UK, University of South Carolina, USA and Karolinska Institutet, Sweden has discovered that cells from sarcomas tend to die in response to p21 and that this is determined by the sensitivity of their mitochondria to oxidants.

They have published their findings in The Journal of Biological Chemistry. The research was funded by the MRC, the NIH, CONACYT and the Swedish Cancer Society

Dr Macip added: "Our research also showed that p21 can kill cells even in the absence of p53, a protein that is in the main responsible for cell death but is inactivated in most cancers.

"This shows that certain types of cancer, sarcomas for instance, but maybe also others, should respond well to drugs that increase the levels of p21, even if they don't have an active p53. The side effects of these therapies should be minimal, since our experiments show that normal cells would arrest but not die in response to p21.

"There are already drugs available that selectively increase p21. Our results provide a rationale for testing them in certain types of cancers, which could be identified using the experiments we describe."
